>> have to check with the expert though. >> it's clear and cold out. no doubt about it. it looks like a very quiet weather pattern. today will be sunny. there is not a lot going on the west coast. highs today will be in the 60s, upper 50s, low 60s. here is sal. steve, good morning. right now we are doing pretty well around the bay area as we start off with live pictures. highway 4 the traffic is not too bad as you drive through. you will see the traffic looking good as you drive westbound and eastbound through the bay point area. also the morning commute looks good if you are driving on north and southbound interstate 880. it's 4:29 let's go back to the desk. we begin with breaking news. the leader of the roman catholic church is resigning. the first pope to do so in nearly 600 years. pope benedict says he's stepping down because of his age and diminishing strength. tara moriarty joins us now from san francisco with more on this mornings stunning announcement. tara. >> reporter: the vatican confirming the pope will resign

february 28th. we are here at st. mary's cathedral. it's right across the street from the arch diocese. we should mention pope benedict is the first to step down in nearly 600 years. the 85-year-old announced his decision in latin this morning during a meeting of vatican cardinals. he emphasized carrying out the duties of pope the leader of a billion roman catholics requires stamina. something he is running out of. after repeatedly examing my congress before god i came to my strength and age are no longer suited for the ministry. he went on to say that strength of mind and body are necessary. strength with which in the last few months has deteriorated me to the extent i had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me. the last pope to resign was

gregory in 1415 he did so to end the civil war within the church. pope benedict the 265th both was born in 1927 and forced into hitlers youth at age 17 shh-- at age 17. he became pope in wyoming. this decision sets the stage for a conclave to elect a new pope before the end of march. coming up we will reflect back on pope benedict and know why he has been controversial at times. time now 4:31. things are getting back to normal. san francisco international airport this morning after a weekend of cancellations from a nor'easter. dozens of flights were canceled friday and saturday as airports in new york, boston closed due to blizzard conditions. that left passengers stranded including sfo. all major airports have reopened following the store.

at least nine deaths are being blamed on the storm. cleanup efforts have only gap. tori spent the weekend in boston. >> reporter: digging outs and cleaning up neighborhoods buried in snow. rescuing cars stranded on highways. from pennsylvania to maine the blizzard that hit friday is still wreaking havoc. connecticut saw some of the highest snow totals. >> people open their doors and look out their windows. they see 40 inches of snow and realize this is not a snowstorm this is a disaster. this is an emergency. >> reporter: whether trying to dig out a parking spot or digging out barn animals this cleanup effort is a workout. >> there is no easy way top get around it this unless you have a snowplow. >> reporter: with snow totals topping three feet in some areas and snow banks even higher people are running out of places to put it all. >> there is is a ton of snow and there is nowhere to put it. so it's frustrating. >> reporter: while many are

reclaired on campus at the university of southern mississippi where the tornado damaged a number of buildings. >> it was just like you hear tornadoings described. it was very loud. very click. the buildings are shake and you can tell that the trees are flying back. >> now the storm threat is gone and now the cleanup begins. the hattiesburg public school district canceled class today because of storm damage. >> look at that. >> when the tornado hit many picked up their cameras and started filming. one woman said it sounded like a train. when she ran to her bedroom, the windows exploded. >> this morning the man hunt continues for the former los angeles police officer wanted in the killings of three people. they have announced a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture of dorner.

the mayor of los angeles calls this is a case of domestic terrorism. >> we will not tolerate anyone under mining the security, the tranquility of our neighborhoods and our communities. >> investigators say the killer is targeting the la police department and that has led to unprecedented security messages. yesterday's head quarters were head. the killings have prompted countless -- one customer said he spotted dorner in a lowe's in north ridge. police entered the store and conducted a massive search. there was no sign of dorner. the man hunt in the los angeles area also led to increased security last night during the grammy awards. the lapd was out in force outside the staple center as the big stars in music walked

the reds carpet. the police officer that was shot and killed by dorner his family is this wednesday. they were ambushed by dorner as they were stopped by a red light. crane's partner was also hit but can thed to survive. doctor -- police say the plan was walking across clayton road. the 52-year-old victim suffering life threatening police did not say whether that in over night two two is a earthquakes. the first quake hit just before 10:30 last night and measured 2.8. the second measured 2.7. there are no reports of any damage. in sacramento today state

senators will visit a presentation about an earthquake early warning system for california. state senator alex has introduced legislation calling for development of the early warning is. the goal would be to provide up to 60 seconds of advance warnings. that would allow enough time for people to take cover, get in a building. let's take a look add the traffic with sal. >> good morning, brian and pam. traffic is off to ha decent start this morning as you are driving around. looking at some of the freeways. 80 freeway from vallejo to berkeley is a nice looking drive with no major problems. you can see traffic continues to look pretty good through this area. also the morning commute is moving along nicely if you are driving at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's a nice looking drive. if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 looks good. all the way up to highway

clear skies out there. a very, very quiet pattern this week. i mean i wish i could tell you maybe there was rain on the way. everything is going in the middle of the country and the pattern is not changing. goes to the middle and then the northeast and great lakes. for us it will be an offshore breeze. temperatures 30s and 40s. not far away from that sight at antioch. it's colder. same could be said for mountain view and redwood city. there is a lot of 30s inland. mainly for those closer to the coast. i think it will be more likely tomorrow. a cold morning. then sunny. slightly warmer. and it's a very quiet pattern. upper 50s, low 60s here. and it doesn't matter top to bottom santa rosa to gilroy. about 58-62. if we were playing the lot toe

the national average is now $3.59 for regular. that is up 25 cents in the last two weeks. the cheapest gas is in billings, montana at $3.05. los angeles has the highest price at $4.10. san francisco has the highest average at $4.02. tonight the los gatos town council will continue a contentious meeting from last monday night on the issue of gun sales. hundreds of people turned out for the hearing last week that was sparked by the opening of the templar sports store. dozens of people spoke both against and in support of the store. after four hours the council decided to continue the meeting tonight. now one of the owners of the templar sports store says he received a death threat following last week's meeting. gun owners stocked up on ammo this weekend. they traveled to solano county fairgrounds. many are concerned about

repeatly proposed state laws includes one that would require permits to buy ammunition. the proposed restrictions have driven up demand and made it tough to find ammunition in stores and online. >> a lot of the websites are completely out. >> because people are feeling the same way you are? >> yeah. i think there is a rush. they are afraid at the very least they will have to register to buy ammo like they do for guns. >> los angeles and sacramento already require permits and background checks for ammunition sales. people who received vouchers instead of cash can redeem those vouchers this week. the event was so popular the $43,000 given for the event ran out. additional $70,000 in vouchers was issued. those can be redeemed for cash this coming friday inside the showcase theater at the marin civic center. in the meantime a gun buy back event has been announced for

people in palo alto and menlo park. that event is scheduled to take place february 23rd. it's being held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 in the afternoon. they can surrender working firearms and no questions asked. video games are smallly a source of controversy. some link to gun violence and a key part of marin's future. the county hopes the industry will spur economic growth. at the same time they asked people to turn in violent video games. and now president obama's gun control prom includes fur studying games. does it look? we are looking at 80 eastbound. you may be going the other way.

little warmer in san francisco. oakland airport is 40. half-moon bay is 40. fairfield with a breeze is being held up. otherwise they would have a north wind. they would be in the 30s. novato is 32. concord 34. there is a lot of cold readings inland. everything says severe clear and it's a warmer pattern. wednesday, thursday, and friday we will see the first 70s of the season. some of the areas that will get the benefit of the north wind. i'm sure there will be patchy fog popping up. what pops up today will be very light. napa will be a little warm. which one degree warmer than yesterday. 60s for some today. it's gradual pattern. very mild to warm. a lot of sunshine. even warmer wednesday, thursday, and friday. i don't see much change here. tomorrow night president obama will deliver his state of the union address. the white house says the main theme of the president's address will be so-called pocketbook issues. policies aimed at helping the middle class.

the carport of the complex when he was robbed. officials describe the gunman as being in his late 20s or early 30s wearing a gray track suit and hoody. anyone with information is asked to call police. unanswered questions about a deadly shooting in san jose. sheriffs deputies say they found the body of a man who had been fatally shot outside of his home around 4:00. around the same time another man showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound. investigators say he had been at the home on rhonda drive and the shooting may have been a botched murder-suicide. >> we are not clear if this is an attempted homicide with a suicide. >> the injured man is expected to survive. deputies says the shooting appears to be an isolated case. the consulting firm hired to advise the local police department described its crime fighting plan at a community meeting. hundreds of people attended

yesterday's discussion. former police chief is not there. he is expected to advise the department next month. >> bratton is not about slop and first. he is looking to improve the practices that supports cease fire. he is looking to improve the internal police department. >> oakland mayor jean quan and police chief spoke at the meeting. they hope to boost staffing levels to at least 900 police officers. time is 4:53. today we will be getting a look at the $1.3 billion highway project that extends bart service to antioch. the highway will also be expanded from two to four lanes from lone tree way. presentation is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the antioch community center
